Curtains vs Blinds: Which Is Better?

Curtains and blinds are one of the most important components of a room, which make the place more attractive and provides privacy from the outside world. It is hard to say which of these is better, as it depends on various factors like the size of the room, what type of look you want, and many other things. But still, you can try to choose the perfect one by knowing the pros and cons of both curtains and blinds. Firstly, let us understand the difference between these.

Most of the time, the words curtains and blinds are misused as if they are synonyms. Curtains are the fabric that fall from top to down and mostly sold in pairs. They can be opened sideways and come in a wide range of widths, lengths, fabrics, colours, and patterns. On the other hand, blinds are a type of window covering, which lift up and down with a cord or lifting mechanism. There are different types of blinds such as Venetian blinds, wooden blinds in India, and roller blinds. Earlier, they were used only in places like offices or corporate places, but now, they are also used in homes as a window treatment.

Now, let us look at some key factors to carefully consider when deciding which of these to choose.

1.Size of the Room-

The size of the room is a very important factor in deciding the better window treatment option. Usually, curtains are larger than windows, whereas blinds are of the almost the same size as windows. Therefore, using curtains requires some extra space. Larger rooms often look good with full-length curtains. Proper texture and colour should be used to complement the design style of the room. Curtains can be used to cover windows of living rooms and master bedrooms. Blinds can be used in places where there is less space like small bedrooms, kitchen, and home offices. If the living room has two windows, the secondary window can be covered with blinds, while the primary ones look good with curtains.

2.Amount of Light Entering the Room-

Curtains and blinds provide different lighting conditions. Light colour curtains allow natural light in the room, which makes the room brighter. If darker room is required, then we can use heavy curtains in dark colours. You can also use a combination of light and heavy curtains to allow natural light during the day and black out with heavy curtains at night. Blinds do not allow light to enter the room when closed and hence create a darker space. It can be kept fully opened to allow all the light to enter the room.

3.Design Style-

The main task of windows is to make your room look beautiful and aesthetic, while making it a bright place to live in with adequate ventilation. That’s why it is very important to select proper window covering, which suits the room furniture and design style. If you want a royal look that has various design components and want to complement your design with some fancy pattern, you can go with long curtains of matching colours. If the room requires a minimalistic design, then you should go with blinds. It gives a more professional look and can be used at offices. Blinds also come in various textures and colours to match with various room designs.

4.Ease of Maintenance –

Curtains are easy to maintain as compared to blinds.  Some curtains can be machine-washed, while some need to be dry-cleaned. They are easy to remove and replace. As for blinds, different types of blinds are to be cleaned differently. You can clean most of them easily with a moist cloth and wipe away dust. Roman blinds need to be dismantled, washed separately and then reassembled. Venetian blinds require more attention because slats gather a lot of dust, which need to be cleaned regularly.

5. Installation and Automation –

Curtains are very easy to install as they just need a rod to be fixed on the wall above the window. You can easily hang the curtains on to these rods. Different types of blinds need different types of installation. Blinds, once installed, cannot be replaced easily, while curtains can be easily replaced. Both curtains and blinds can be automized to make them easier to use. Automation makes the room smarter. Some curtains can be controlled through remote or mobile apps. Similarly, you can also find motorised blinds, which ensure ease of use.

Curtains have been in use for a very long time and most of people are now comfortable with this window treatment as they look more pleasing to eyes. They give a more aesthetic look to the place keeping the surroundings brighter and fresher. They are easy to maintain and less expensive. Blinds require more maintenance and are hard to install, but they give a more professional look. They look great in small-sized rooms. Know your needs, consider the above points and make a well-informed choice.
